Ausstellungen sind ein komplexes Medium der Architekturkommunikation mit hoher Dynamik. In Ausstellungen werden unterschiedliche Kommunikations­tools miteinander kombiniert, um einem kuratorischen Konzept folgend einem Publikum architektur­bezogene Erkenntnisse und Erlebnisse zu vermitteln.
In diesem Seminar werden wir uns forschend mit der Frage aus­einander­setzen, ob und wie das gelingt. Hierfür werden, aufbauend auf bereits erfolgten Untersuchungen aus den Jahren 2014–2018, gezielte Besucher*innen­befragungen und -beobachtungen konzipiert, auf der Architektur­biennale in Venedig durchgeführt und anschließend aus­gewertet. Aufgrund der Corona-Pandemie ist die Exkursion für Anfang Oktober geplant.
 

Evaluation of Architecture Exhibitions. The Venice Architecture Biennale

Exhibitions are a complex medium of architectural communication with high dynamics. They combine various communication tools in order to convey architecture-related insights and experiences to an audience in accordance with a curatorial concept.
In this seminar, we will conceive and carry out empirical research to find out whether and how that actually works. For this purpose, we will design visitor surveys and observations based on previous studies from 2014–2018, to be applied on the spot at the Architecture Biennale in Venice. Please note that due to the corona pandemic, the excursion is planned for early October.

Die Vorlesung führt in Theorie und Praxis der Ar­chi­tek­tur­­kom­mu­ni­ka­ti­on ein. Es werden die wichtigsten Frage­­stellungen, An­wen­dungs­­­be­rei­che, Strategien und Instrumente der Vermittlung von Architektur und Stadt vorgestellt und anhand aktueller Beispiele diskutiert.
Das Gesamt­modul „Architektur­kommunikation und Wis­sen­schaft­li­ches Ar­bei­ten“ wird – nach der­zeitigem Stand – in Form einer gemein­samen Klausur zu den Inhalten bei­der Vorlesungen geprüft.
 

Introduction to the Communication of Architecture
This lecture series serves as an introduction to the theory and prac­tice of Communication of Architecture. The central problems are formulated, important fields of application are presented, useful stra­te­gies and tools for communication are introduced and dis­cus­sed in terms of strengths and weaknesses.
The concluding written test is referring to the whole module, including the lecture series „Scientific Methods for Architecture“.

Die Vorlesung geht der Frage nach, welche Bedeutung wis­sen­schaft­li­che Methoden für die Ar­chi­tek­tur haben. Nach einer Ein­führung in die Grund­lagen der philosophischen Erkenntnis- und Wissenschaftstheorie werden verschiedene Strategien der Er­kennt­nis­ge­win­nung vorgestellt und anhand von klassischen und ak­tu­el­len Bei­spie­len auf ihren Wert für die Forschung im Bereich von Architektur und Stadt geprüft.

Scientific Methods for Architecture
The lecture series asks for the meaning and importance that sci­en­ti­fic methods have for the discipline of architecture. Following a short introduction to Epistomology and the Philosophy and So­cio­lo­gy of Science, different strategies of knowledge production are presented and tested for relevance by analysis of classical as well as contemporary studies in the fields of architectural and ur­ba­nis­tic research.
The concluding written test is referring to the whole module, which also includes the lecture series “Introduction to the Communication of Architecture”.
